Interview
The head coach of women’s national taekwondo team in an interview with Shirzanan
Players’ improvement is the best motivation for coaches
Shirzanan: Fereshteh Movahed /translation by Roja Najafi: Iran women’s taekwondo team is the busiest women’s team in Iran these days, mostly due to the achievement of their first Olympics share by Sarah Khoshjamal-Fekri. For next year the team will face the Asian taekwondo competitions, so they are berried under loads of practice for now. Mino Maddah, who has been the head coach of women’s taekwondo team since 2001, witnessed a lot of progress in the recent years. Shirzanan believes that Maddah has a lot to say about her experiences and women’s taekwondo in Iran.
Do you see any improvements in women’s taekwondo?
At the end of last year we had our first international deployment of women’s team to Korean open competitions; we won the first medal of these competitions. Before that for many years we were inexperienced in important games, so we had put all our efforts to gain experience. We were 20 years behind everyone else in Asia. But since 2002 we start wining medals. Now everyone expect us to win and obtain medals. With the passing the Olympics qualification games we put an end to the criticisms. All these show women’s taekwondo is in its way to a great future and it is progressing.
What should we do to pass through this way faster?
We should never forget that while we are practicing our opponents are at work too. I think our best chance is to choose the team members wisely and carefully. Also holding preparatory matches is very important. Participating in overseas competitions and competing against international opponents are a great way to gain experience. These all can help the team to get to its best shape faster.
What are your main plans for Beijing 2008 Olympics?
At the moment we have 2 women’s taekwondo teams. One of them has Sarah Khoshjamal-Fekri and 4 other selected taekwondo players. They have started their Olympics camp. The other team has the players who are preparing themselves for the Asian competitions. They are our youngsters; nonetheless we are counting on their abilities.
Is Sarah going to go to Olympics or do you have other choices?
Well the best choice is Sarah of course. She performed better than the others and gained us a spot in Olympics. If she stays healthy she will be our choice for Beijing. We are observing her opponents’ techniques. If we know the players who she will play against well enough she can be more successful. Sarah Khoshjamal is in a good physical shape. Two weeks after the Vietnam’s games she started her practices. She will also compete in the Holland’s world taekwondo championship.
How is going to Holland games?
4 or 5 of the Hugo players will participate; Khoshjamal will be among them. We don’t know much about other participant countries. We are not giving the names for the team out yet.
What about Asian championship and Iran’s women’s taekwondo second team?
we are planning to send players in all 5 weights. But nothing is certain yet.
In your opinion what is the reason behind the weaknesses of women coaches in Iran?
In the past we had less international tournaments. When one doesn’t have any competitive matches to look forward to naturally one doesn’t have enough motivations to work. Also we cannot have shared camps with male team. But things are getting better and with the improvements of women’s taekwondo the coaches are inspired more.
