Memoir: Sara Khoshjamal Fekri for Shirzanan

I was not very good at Taekwondo

Shirzanan – Sara Khoshjamal Fekri / translated by Roja Najafi: Eight years ago when I first heard about Taekwondo, I decided I wanted to become the best Taekwondo player ever. I had such high expectations. At the time, the most important thing that happened to me in terms of my Taekwondo was getting to know Maryam Mehrazar, head coach of the Iran women’s national taekwondo team.

At first during my practice sessions for the national team I easily felt tired and disappointed; I seemed the weakest of them all. But Mehrazar’s advice and encouragement kept me going. She taught me how to learn from my mistakes and to go forward with hope. My family also had an important role in my success. In any case, eventually I was chosen for the women’s national taekwondo team and I started to win medals here and there in International competitions.

An exclusive interview with a number of Basketball players from Iran’s national women’s team, shortly after the end of the game

Just One Step!

Shirzanan – Shabnam Shakourian / translated by Roja Najafi: They only had to hold on for one more quarter to win the Bronze medal at the West Asian basketball championships. But everything changed in that quarter. The Iran women’s basketball team was 15 points ahead when Eisaian, one of their best players, was disqualified for committing her fifth foul and had to leave the game. By losing Eisaian, Iran’s game was ruined. This motivated their opponents, Syria, and eventual Iran lost the game 70 -78.

Iran finished 4th in the tournament. Although coming 4th is not as sweet as winning a medal, it is a good start. The result surprised many of the Iranian authorities at the championship, since Iran has limited experience in international basketball competitions. Before this match they had participated in only one other (unofficial) international tournament.

After Iran’s last match against Syria, Shayesteh Motesharei, one of the players, spoke to Shirzanan.

“We could have easily won this game. Our team was not necessarily weaker than the Syrian team. We are just less experienced than the other teams. Despite this, we tried our best. This was our first official match,” she said.

Armineh Petrous, another member of Iran women’s team added: “We picked the right tactics for the match. We could have got better results if we had been able to keep our concentration. This proves that in order to become a basketballing power in Asia we need to gain more experience in international tournaments.”
