Shirzanan reviews the secret deployment of two players of Iran women’s national Taekwondo team to Chinese Taipei

Shirzanan: The decision makers in Iran taekwondo federation decided to select the one-woman taekwondo player who is going to Olympics 2008 far from the media attention. When Sara Khoshjamal Fekri won the Olympic qualification for Iran’s female taekwondo team, neither did any other female taekwondo player in Iran match her abilities nor did she suspect that the officials might think of sending someone else to the Olympics.

She was not alone in this optimism; most people thought Sara would represent Iran in Beijing Olympic 2008. But in the Asian games in Manchester her rival was discovered; Fatemeh Ne’mati who won Asia’s gold medal made everyone to doubt if Sarah is the best choice. The deputy of the taekwondo federation declared that there would be a match between the two potentials and the federation decided to select the best female taekwondo player based on the result of the match.

Shirzanan: Fahimeh Khezr Heidari /translated by Roja Najafi: This is Iran and we are half of the population of the country in which even the sunshine is allocated; Being a woman is what denies our skins the touch of wind, rain and sunshine. For years now the Iranian women have been hiding their hair along with their passion, energy and movement and as the result of this motionless life style the surveys show that In Iran 50 percent of women older than 55 and 90 percent of women older than 75 are suffering from Osteoporosis.

Maybe it was these studies that led the city management department of Tehran City Hall to develop the prospects of women public sports facilities in the big cities like Tehran by opening Women’s Green Areas. Behesht-e Madaran or Mother’s Paradise is a park located at the junction of Hemat and Haghani freeways in Tehran and it is exclusively for women use. Maybe it was not the social and health concerns that made the city managers to think of a separated park for women and instead it is an experiment inline with the government’s main project in separation of male and female spaces in all public places.

Whatever the motivation is two weeks ago in a relatively deserted place in the capital the Women’s Park has opened its doors to women eager for outdoor activities. The park is open to women daily from early hours of morning to 8 PM; it is an opportunity for them to take their covers off and let their body to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air....
