Interview
Shirzanan’s interview with a female bowler and a member of Iran women’s national bowling team
Bowling coaches in Iran are not certified
Shirzanan: Negaar Khosravi /translated by Roja Najafi: It is about three years now that Mahshid Poursaadi (born-1984) is practicing bowling. And from the summer of last year she became one of the bowlers in Iran women’s national bowling team. Despite the many problems that the federation faces, she thanks the federation over and over. It is good to be thankful for the opportunities and efforts, but question popping up at the end of this interview when we see the shortcomings; perhaps it is the unawareness of one’s rights that despite minimal support makes a deserving athlete to feel indebt to a federation.
How did you get into the national team?
I passed the qualification competitions and I was invited to the team.
Do you know that none of the bowling lines in Iran are standard?
Yes, the bowling allays we have in Iran are not standard, even our bowling balls, which we order ourselves are not standard after they put he wholes on. In Malaysia they told us that they are not good.
Which club in Tehran is the best, considering all of these?
I thing the Tirajhe Bowling club is the best. Some time ago the roof of Isteghlal club collapsed and it damaged the bowling line.
Do you have a bodybuilding trainer for the team?
No, not yet, before our trip and after our new coach Mr. Owshani, we had sessions of aquatic therapy and that was very helpful.
Is Mr. Owshani still the coach? Do you think Iranian coaches are qualified?
no, so far we have changed our coach with each deployment; even some of the bowlers of the team were changed. People who teach bowling in Iran are all in the same level. A foreign coach is definitely good for our progress. Because they have the experience of working on the standard allay. None of the Iranian bowling coaches have the certification or credentials that is required by the international standards. The federation has invited some coaches after the Malaysia competitions but nothing is final yet.
Was it hard to play with Islamic cover and Hijab in Malaysia? How was the reaction of other people?
It didn’t bother us. We had to have our veils on. We are used to it. Our outfits were very interesting to them. Many people asked us how are we able to roll in these clothes. Many other Muslim countries don’t allow women to go for international games because the men don’t want their women to appear in front of strangers. Iranians are not like that. We were the only Muslim team in Malaysia. Malaysian women, who were Muslim, too did not have Hijab.
How was your performance in Malaysia?
Among 400 participants, 30 were in our group and among those 16 people went to finals. Maryam Vanaki had the second place, I had the third and Rozita Abedini had the 16th place. Maryam Tabatabi was injured and did not compete. But among us no one go any medal; the lack of self-confidence was the cause, Here when we practice the salon is empty and silent. But in Malaysia people were shouting out loud and they played music so we all got stressed out.
But the team left Tehran way earlier than the games?
Yes, The federation was very nice to us, they sent us 12 days a head and we could adopt ourselves in some levels. I am very thankful to the federation that sent us 12 days a head.
How do you see the future of bowling in Iran? How does the federation help the bowling team?
I think we will have a bright future. Federation works a lot to make thing better; we should be patient. Bowling is an expensive sport especially in Iran since it is new and not known by many. The federation is supposed to build standard lines, but it will take time. Federation also let us to practice without paying any fees that’s good.
