How did Paralympic Games start?

Shirzanan: It is interesting to know how and when Paralympic games have started. In 1948, three years after the end of WWII, Sir Ludwig Guttmann organized a series of competitions for those with spinal injuries and were disabled during the Second World War. The games were held in England. 4 years later the disabled athletes from Netherlands participated in the games and an international movement started. For the first time the Paralympics was held in Rome in 1960 and in 1976 in Toronto other groups of disabled have joined the games and they held the first Winter Paralympics games in this time.

Iranian sportswomen In Paralympics 2008

Shirzanan: On the threshold of the Beijing Paralympic Games Shirzanan presents an overview of the four Iranian women participating in Paralympics 2008. Iran’s Paralympic team has left Tehran in Friday. Although Iran had 86 spots in 2008 Paralympics, the authorities in disabled sports federation decided to send only 74 athletes to these games, 4 of which are sportswomen.

These athletes unlike the three Iranian sportswomen participating in Olympics who were experiencing their first appearance in Olympics this year, are experienced and have participated in Paralympics competitions before. The four Iranian Paralympic women are competing in table tennis, shooting and athletics. Fatemeh Montazeri, a member of iarn’s national athletic team is one of the hops of Iran for wining a paralympic medal.

She, who is a member of Iran’s national disabled track and fields team for 16 years, believes improveing her own record will be a good enough achivement. About the paralympic camps Fatemeh said, “I will do my best to win a medal but since the level of competitions is high I think even improving my own record is a big step.” She will compete in Shot Put and Discus.
