Interview
Shirzanan: Fereshteh Movahed /translated by Roja Najafi: Neda is a young girl from a village near Varamin in south of Tehran. Although it is a long commute from her village to Tehran Neda does her best in using the athletic facilities in Tehran.
Neda Khani Youssefi is the member of three national teams; the most interesting one is Asian Alish Wrestling. She has a firm and confidence tone. Alish wrestling is very much like wrestling with a tone of Judo in it. Neda is also a member of Iran national teams in Kabaddi and Football. In 2005, she won the silver medal in the world championship in Russia. Iran’s general Media has ignored her, like most of our female national champions.
Attention: Dear readers, If you have any specific questions which did not address in this interview please forward them to us so we can ask Neda about them: Shirzanan@yahoo.com
Please introduce yourself to our readers?
I am Neda, I was born in 1982 in Youssef Reza Village in Varamin. I started my athletic career when I was 17 and it is for 6 years now that I am professionally engaged with sports.
How come did you choose Alish wrestling? How long ago Iran formed a national team for Alish Wrestling?
Actually it was accidental: I read in a newspaper that Alish Wrestling is not band for women anymore: so I signed in. I practice in 63 Kg. I like the individual and masculine sports: So I like Alish Wrestling. From 4 years ago Iran has the national team.
What are the differenced between Alish and Wrestling?
Alish is a combination of Judo and Wrestling and it has the rules of both games.
How did your family react to this?
My reaction is more important that my families: I liked to be the first Iranian women Wrestler who competes in international fields: Of course I wasn’t Elmira Dadyar was the first. She got the Bronze medal in Russia.
Who is the head coach for the national Alish team? What federation supervises Alish Wrestling?
Our head coach was Ms. Shirin Kubaie from Kyrgyzstan. I don’t know who will be our coach next. Alish is under the Public Sports federation. The federation will pay fro our deployment expenses but we have not other payment: I pay for my Wrestling exercises from my Football income.
What was your latest rank in the national competition?
I got Gold medal this year. The national competition is really tough: 24 provinces in 8 weights participate in it.
What is your next plan?
nothing yet: For about 2 year now, the security guard division does not let us to participate in any international games. I don’t know the reason. But I love to go to the Laos games. For now I practice on my own, mostly bodybuilding exercises.
Do you have similar problems in Football and Kabaddi?
My main problem is commuting. It is a long way from my village to Tehran. Everybody says that I am a phenomenon: but I want to be good in only one field. I am also invited to Judo team and Rugby team. But I want to choose only one. I really like to go to Olympics and that may make me to choose Judo.
What do you think can help professional Women’s Sports in Iran, since you are involved with more than three?
I think we need more money in women’s sports: so we can hire better coaches and concentrate in up-to-date techniques.
