The Sports Person of the Year

Shirzanan: Who is Herald Tribune’s Sports figure of 2008 and why? Harvey Araton’s article for the sports section of Herald Tribune was interesting because he did not pick his sports figure among 2008’s distinguished athletes. Asaton writes, “In the context of some remarkable sports tales, from David Tyree to Tiger Woods to Rafael Nadal to Michael Phelps, my person of the year is not a champion, not a competitor and not even a sports fan.”

Herald Tribune picks Laura Hagen, 58, a lawyer turned legal recruiter who happened upon an article in The Chicago Tribune in the run-up to the Summer Olympics about one female sprinter’s daunting quest to make an unlikely journey, from Baghdad to Beijing. The 21 year old Dana (Hussein or Hussain) Adul-Razzak was that athlete. Shirzanan has this article in Farsi. To read the article in English please go to:

Based in the latest Badminton Ranking Chart, in 2009, Sahar Zamanian has 40 scores improvement. She has the 202 ranking. Negin Amiripoor is in 171 place with 32 steps improvement. The change in Iran’s badminton federation policy toward female badminton players is also an influential factor in these improvements.

The federation officials had declared last year that a search for young and new talents in badminton was successful. Seyed Bahador Zakizadeh said, “Our goal is to bring our badminton players to ranks higher than 50.” He added, “ We know the International badminton calendar for the coming year. We have to set our schedules so we can participate in international competition prepared and ready.”

Iran’s International Fajr competitions also help the international ranking. 5 countries so far had registered for Fajr badminton competition; India, Malaysia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Iraq.
