Interview
Shirzanan – Foad Khaknejad / Translated by Roja Najafi: That small percentage of women’s sport from Iran that gets reflected by national Iranian media was always under the spotlight and in some cases even it was protested against by women athletes. All these plus the cultural traditional obstacles the national media has always excused themselves from covering women’s sports news in Iran.
But what about the Iranian media centers and news agencies outside of Iran; those who do not have the traditional limitations of media in Iran, do they cover women’s sports news often and fairly? We are having an interview with Farangis Mohebby, the sports reporter for BBC Persian (Farsi) radio and Radio Zamaneh.
Farangis why did you choose to become a sports reporter?
I am not only a sports reporter. In fact most of my work in Radio Zamaneh is not related to sports. But I work on sports as well because I am a sports fan myself.
How often do you see a woman sports reporter in different news agencies you worked?
In BBC Persian I was the only woman in sports, but in other branches of BBC there are many capable female reporters in sports.
How much do you thin the Iranian media outside of Iran help to fill the lack of women’s sports news coverage inside Iran?
I think the best example of active women’s sports websites is Shirzanan. Shirzanan has a couple of advantages; one is that it has reporters inside Iran, also they know professional sportswomen and the other is that it exclusively covers women’s sports. This is an advantage because in Radio Zamaneh for example, we have 10 minutes each week to cover the most important sports headlines, so naturally women’s sports is pushed aside.
Does BBC or Zamaneh have a special strategy for women’s sports or does women’s sports have a section?
No, not really. But since women’s sports in Iran is not that available we cover everything we can, sometimes the issue even doesn’t have any news value, but we still work it.
Do you personally have any reason to work on Iranian women’s sports?
To me women’s sports in Iran is like an attempt to improve women’s situation. I don’t evaluate women’s sports technically. Every single athletic activity for women in Iran means, a try an attempt. But in media coverage, when the athletes have social limitations we in the media become limited as well; so an active reporter don’t work on women’s sports in Iran and goes after a subject that gives him or her enough material.
How can we renovate Iran women’s sports so the media gets interested in covering it like men’s sports?
Well although women’s sports in Iran has developed a lot in recent years and women are active in almost all branches of sports, and Iran even has sportswomen champs in some fields, we don’t see them much in TV or newspapers. I think the maid reason is that women’s sports in public and community level is still behind men’s sports.
Regular people get interested when they can see and follow their champ, their hero, the women’s sports should become popular among people. All over the world it is like this; how many people know a national woman soccer player in England for example.
Men’s sports is popular so media covers it and it becomes more and more popular. Women’s sports have to get to that first level of popularity among people and then media will help it.
