Interview
Shirzanan:Fereshteh Movahed/translated by Roja Najafi: Asian Women Canoe Championship was held in Korea with 26 countries participating. In the 10-day competitions Iran’s women Canoe team with its two athletes, surprised everyone by obtaining four gold medals and two silver medals in rowing. Most of this surprise is because this field is a very new field for women’s sport in Iran: only one year old, and no one had expected any achievements in it. In this regard we are having an interview with the deputy of rowing sports federation in women’s division.
What is the federation’s next plan for women’s canoeing?
The federation’s main intention and goal in women’s division is to establish a fixed place within Asia so that we can use this as a springboard to obtain a higher level in an International level. This is a very achievable aim especially with the practices that we held in the past year.
How about the Asian Championships? And are you satisfied with the team’s performances so far?
Well, this year we participated in Asian championship with teams in Flat-water canoe (under 21 and Open women) and Canoe Polo (open women). Fortunately we were successful in both fields. Since powerful teams in Asia teams attended in these tournaments the competitions were very tight. Our job was harder in Canoe Polo especially because Iran was last year’s champion. I am happy with our teams.
How did we make it in this very short time?
Only with hard and continuous practices; we are hoping to do so in future.
Do you see any obstacles in the way?
Becoming a champion is not possible without the accurate planning and scheduling. These plans also need to grew and become better along with our rowers. Of course because of the recent results we have high expectations from our girls. Because of our achievements women’s rowing, canoeing and boating have a very special place in women’s sport and in the Athletic & Physical Education Organization and our athletes in this fields should keep up their good work. I am positive about the future; certainly with more help and understanding from sport authorities we will gain better results.
