In a suitable season for skiers

How to prepare for a safer and more enjoyable Skiing!

Shirzanan: Winter is here; after the recent snowstorms all across our country, Iran, it is only natural to think of winter sports. Skiing as one of the most popular winter sports gets our attention in Shirzanan. USA TODAY had an article by Phil Galewitz on the importance of preparation and training before skiing called “It all goes downhill, nicely, for fit skiers”. The article suggests that even a short period of training before you plan to ski considerably prevents injuries that can be cause d otherwise by this challenging sport. Marjan Namazi has translated the article from English to Farsi for Shirzanan. On the next issue of Shirzanan you can find some recommended stretching exercises for skiing from the same article. Skiing pistes are relatively free

Shirzanan-Shabnam Shakorian/translation by Roja Najafi: On the day that the head of Tehran Police force started the new project of fighting with inappropriate Islamic covers, no one has thought that this new Islamic Guidance project will open its way to the ski resorts and pistes. But it only got a short couple of months to hear the news of the new division of policewomen on ski pistes from Sardar Radan. He said: “As winter approaches there will be officers (both men and women) working in different areas especially skiing resorts in order to deal with cases of inappropriate Islamic covers.”

He continued, “ the policewomen passed their ski training so they can work easily in the ski piste.” This new project started in the midst of newly raised concerns about inappropriateness of women’s Islamic athletic outfits. The issue became problematic especially for skiing, after some foreign newspapers projected a freer ambiance in ski pistes in the country compare to the other parts of Iran.

With no doubts for people who visited ski pistes in Iran, in the past couple of weeks, Sardar Radan’s new project has been noticeable. Women police forces stand on the top of the piste, wearing skiing outfits warning young girls about their Hijab. There is a group of policewomen standing at the bottom of the ski run to have more control on the area. However it seems in Iran ski pistes there is a kind of “armistice” between the young generation and the Islamic conservatives, as a reporter from Independent puts it. Those who are regulars to ski piste in Iran believe that in the past two years the pistes got more open to women skiers. ......
