Shirzanan: Shirzanan’s national division /translated by Roja Najafi: One week into the Olympics, two of the three Iranian women athletes are out of the games and the only remaining hope for Iran’s women athletes is Sara Khoshjamal in Taekwondo. In August 20th Sara along with Naderian, Iran men’s Taekwondo player – are the two players who will compete under 49kg for Iran. The experts in sports believe that Sara has a good chance in obtaining a medal and becoming the first Iranian women who wins an Olympics medal from Iran.
Considering Sara`s hard practices and preparation performances, she was also the main hope among the three Iranian women’s in Olympics 2008, who now have been eliminated from the olmpics: Najmeh Abtin, Archery, was eliminated in the first round. It is said that Najmeh had a hand injury; she placed 60th with 563 scores among 64 archers where she couldn’t even keep up with her own record.
Najmeh’s hand injury was not her only disadvantage; her coach could not be with her because there was no ID card issued for him by Iran’s Olympic committee. The Koran head coach who was angry left Iran’s Olympic camp. Karim Safaie, the head of Iran’s Archery federation who is not happy with Najmeh’s results, criticizes Iran’s Olympic committee: “I believe the main cause of Abtin’s elimination was her coach’s absence from the competitions and Iran’s Olympic committee is responsible for this mistake. They did not support our Korean coach and finally he left the team.”
Homa Hossein, Iran’s women rowing female Olympian and the third Iranian women athlete present at 2008 Olympics came out 24th among the 24th rowers. Homa also finished last in the B group with 08:07:20 time. Although in their first appearance in the Olympics, these two Iranian women athletes did not performed well, it was a great step to be taken for Iran’s women’s sports.
