A short chat with Shirzanan’s Friends

Our precious support

Shirzanan: One year ago in our first issue when we wrote that we aim to amend the lack of the news coverage in the national media on women sports in Iran we forgot to mention that we intend to build a house for women athletes and for sports lovers; a home for our champions to write about their happiness and sadness; a home for the sports lovers to chase that sadness out and to share their criticism, complaints and visions with us.

Today, after one year of being a patient pal, we have a complaint of our own; for some time now Shirzanan has been the subject governmental Online filtering inside Iran. This unprecedented act left a huge question mark in our mind that what does the women’s sports world with all its sincerity, peacefulness and patience have to hide form the public to be filtered censored and banned by ministry of cultural guidance?

Women’s sports and Media

Shirzanan: Shabnam Shakorian /translated by Roja Najafi: It was one year ago these days that Shirzanan weekly started. None of us knew, back then, that what would happen; women’s sports in Iran was excluded from media and it was restricted in many ways. Because of these restrictions many of our journalist friends thought that publishing a weekly magazine that only covers women’s sports is a lost cause and useless to begin with. Despite the many hardships we got together and decided to publish Shirzanan.

It was hard; for every single report or interview we went through tremendous amount of paperwork; we passed through many closed doors. The red tapes were to the degree of disappointment, but the rapid improvement of women’ sports kept us going. One year has passed now from the day that first issue of Shirzanan published online; Iran women’s sports has many achievements, medals and two Olympic qualifiers. Today the majority of newspapers and news agencies joined Shirzanan in reporting on women’s sports as part of their daily coverage and many believe that this is one of the biggest achievements of women’s sports in Iran.

In this regard Hajar Nejatizade, the deputy of Iran volleyball federation, told Shirzanan, “Media coverage and attention on women’s sports has a crucial role in the progress of women’s sports.” She mentioned of the days that women’s sport and athletic news had no place in the mainstream media and said, “Fortunately in the past two years there are more news involving women’s sports; this helps the development of women’s sports in Iran.”
