Interview
Shirzanan: The squash court has a air of excitement in it. Squash, which was not known a couple of years ago as it is today, has lots of participants and many educational classes. Many tennis players have joined squash because there are some similarities between the two fields, but of course the differences are many. We like to know if female Squash players feel good about their conditions. And we go tot Sahar Saremi, the well-known female squash player in Iran.
How old are you and for how long you have playing squash?
I was born in 1989 and I am playing for 5 years. I was a tennis player and when I heard of squash I got interested.
Why did you choose squash over tennis?
It is much faster and more exciting than tennis, at least for me it is. You need to think fast and decide and act immediately. If you lose your concentration you will lose the game. Strategy is very important in Squash.
So Squash is for smart people?
well, really it is.
What about your parents, are they athletic as well?
My mom plays tennis. They are very supportive of me.
How many hours a day do you practice?
I practice every other day for two hours. I need to increase my hours though.
Do you have a coach?
No, I don’t have any coach. It is not only me none of the team members has a coach. We all practice on our own.
Did you participate in any international squash competitions?
Yes, last year in March I played in Switzerland. I was the first veiled squash player from Iran. I lost my game to a French opponant.
Who paid for the expenses?
I paid for everything. The federation just gave me the permission to participate.
How is Squash in Iran for women?
Very weak compare to other countries. We are improving every year but it is not much. We don’t have a well-organized national team and like other sports squash needs planning, good coaches and bodybuilding trainers.
Did you reflect any of these problems?
We complained individually, that we need a permanent coach and all these. But nothing has changed.
What is your suggestion for a change?
I think we need to put some efforts in squash and invest on it like any other sport; it is not logical to put efforts on adult teams. We need to work on younger generations. It is never late to start working on the foundations. We need to think of the future generation.
