Reflecting on new Table Tennis`s outfit

Shirzanan – Marjan Namazi: The international federation of Table Tennis (ITTF) has put all its efforts on attracting more viewers for women’s table tennis. Thus the federation is pushing for a new athletic outfit, which includes short skirts and tight tops, the same as the ones the women tennis players are wearing. This is coming from the fact that one of the attractions of women’s tennis and what caused it to be so popular is the players outfit and its fashion rather than their playing skills. Here we are not to deny that our world and everyday life is a subject of change and so all of us like the changes in fashion, but we want to raise a more important issue than fashion and that is the public opinion about women’s sports in general and how the decisions such as this one by ITTF can form a double standard view between women’s sports and that of men.

After the West Asian chess player was eliminated in Russia

Her defeat was natural

Shirzanan: The best women in the chess world got together in Russia for World Women Chess Championship. They got qualified for these championship after wining their countries and regions championships. Among the 64 chess players was Atousa Pourkashiyan from Iran (West Asia). In her first match she lost to Alexandra Kosteniuk and was eliminated from these games. She is the first Iranian woman who got qualified for the World Women Chess Championship.

Months before this competition Pourkashiyan was complaining that she did not have a coach and that she is practicing on her own. Apparently two weeks to the competitions the Chess federation finally let her practice with the head coach of Iran’s chess team. At any case Pourkashiyan attended the competitions without any coach.

In an interview with Shirzanan, Pourkashiyan explained, “ The WWCC is the highest level chess competitions for women. Although from two months ago I knew who is my opponent for the first game, I didn’t see myself as a loser and I went there to win. Kosteniuk ranks 9th and my ranking is 52. She is much more experienced and a very good player.”

Pourkashiyan explained sadly, “from all 64 participants I was the only one without a coach.” Pourkashian had practiced only for 6 hours with a coach. She criticized, “ the federation didn’t have any schedule for my practice and preparation. I put chess as my first priority and I will change my other plans if they give me a schedule.”
