An interview with the Iranian Cyclists Couple in Shirzanan
Jafar acknowledges that Nassim, his wife, became stronger than him
Shirzanan: Solmaz Sharif/translation by Roja Najafi: The former head coach of the Iran women’s national rock-climbing team left the team for a greater good. Nassim Sarabandary first met her husband and the love of her life through rock climbing and she becomes found of them both. Nassim and her husband, Jafar Edrisi, decided to bike around the world and plant trees along their path so that it becomes a green path and a symbol of peace in the world. The whole process is 20,000 kilometers long; so far they have pedaled 6,000 kilometer and they are in United States of America. Shirzanan has an interview with Nassim and Jafar, the Iranian cyclists couple.
Where did you get the idea of cycling around the world?
Nassim: Jafar was a climber; I actually was introduced to this field through him. Unfortunately Jafar quit climbing but I continue. We were both looking for a way to start practicing a mutual sport together again. We also found some fiend who had done similar things before us: one of them had walked from North of Iran to South between Caspian sea and Persian Golf, the others had walked around Europe and there is one of our friends who walked around the world and it got him four years. All these gave us an idea.
Jafar: We got the idea of planting trees came from our friend, Reza, he is cycling for green environment and he is in Malaysia right now.
Nassim said that you were her first coach. How do you see women’s sport in Iran?
Jafar: I am very positive about it. Rock climbing is a very harsh sport perhaps everyone thinks it does not suit the long polished nails of women. But we did it and there were times that I could not continue and Nassim went a head. She became stronger than me. Women athlete in Iran proved that: women with Hijab who climbed very hard reaching peaks.
Wasn’t it hard to pedal all these way?
Nassim: At first it was hard for me. It was a new experience but of course the perseverance and patience that I have learned in climbing helped me and I could bare the hardship. It is really hard to ride 20 K per hour while the cars in the road passing by very fast.
do you think being a professional athlete can be considered a job for woman in Iran?
Nassim: Certainly not. I sacrificed things in my life that all women want to have them. Of course I do not regret it but it is hard; today, after two years I still have not received my coaching salary and my referee compensations. I am not at all happy with the climbing federation. That is why I did not start cycling as a professional sport. I do it for my own heart and for peace and green environment. I cannot wait to finish this and go back to rock climbing again.
Please note that the video recording of this interview will be available on the next issue of Shirzanan.
