The fourth Iranian women’s gymnastics league

Shirzanan: The fourth women’s gymnastics league was held last week in Shahis Azarpey’s stadium hosted by Iran’s gymnastics federation. 17 teams, in three age groups are competing in these competitions: (10-15, 15-17 and 18). Based on the previous statements from the gymnastics federation, there were supposed to be 20 teams competing in this league. But unfortunately 3 teams were forced to withdraw due to financial difficulties and few private sponsors.

Shirzanan – Nasrin Afzali /translated by Roja Najafi: one-two three, one- two- three, one- two- three, we hear their voices before getting to see about 30 women forming a circle, exercising. The coach is standing in the center and others are following her every move. She sometimes turns her head around to be able to watch over everyone. Their black chadors and purses are on the nearest bench with the background of Alborz Mountain.

The happy and energetic faces of women because of exercising in fresh air was a very rare view in our public spaces, but recently with the increasing number of morning exercises’ stations in local parks we see more of these happy faces.

Tahereh, 1968, introduces herself as, “ I practiced for a long time; I was student until very recently when I became the coach. I thought I should pass the required training and I did. From 2005 when, the Aerobics and Bodybuilding formed a federation I got my coaching license.”
